RT-Smart Secure in Canada Real Time's mobile security solution supports Nuclear Response Team
The proposed introduction of armed guards across all UK nuclear installations heralds a new age of heightened security for nuclear power generation stations worldwide.
Real Time is uniquely positioned to deliver a range of robust security solutions following the successful implementation of its new product, RT-Smart Secure, at one of Canada’s largest independent nuclear generation stations.
RT-Smart Secure supports the Canadian utility’s 120-strong Nuclear Response Team (NRT), monitoring hundreds of key locations across the station, maximising security by verifying patrol routes. It also controls the firearm, equipment and vehicle inventories, to ensure accountability on a shift basis.
The system includes the first mobile implementation of Real Time’s FirstBrief solution, which delivers secure briefing and instructional information directly to the officers’ PDAs in a timely, secure and efficient manner.
The key benefit of the solution is the mobile functionality that it affords users, with each PDA able to scan barcodes across the station, allowing the secure and controlled provision of equipment and verification of patrol routes, coupled with the ability to deliver instructions to the NRT on patrol.
The information from the scanned barcodes is stored to produce an accurate audit trail which records inventory and NRT patrol routes.
Alec Harley, Real Time’s process control manager believes that the contract underlines the company’s position in the global energy market. He said: “Demand for our energy business has been growing steadily overseas, but the scale and importance of this project is a real opportunity for Real Time.
"We are using our specialist solutions RT-Smart Secure and FirstBrief, which have been developed specifically for safety-critical industries where security and integrity are of the utmost importance.”
Real Time is currently in talks with other nuclear generators, as well as with a number of North American energy departments, about possible further implementations of this system in plants around the world, cementing the company’s reputation as a global competitor in IT solutions.
