Safety and Integrity Validation and safety are synonymous in the oil and gas industry, due to the constant requirement for attention to detail.
These factors contribute to the external impression of a company’s integrity, and by optimising these processes a company can keep best control of their external image.
Safety Standards
IEC-61508 is now the principle standard governing safety-related systems. It is a large and wide-ranging specification, and most engineers are only aware of its general intentions. Our staff has an extensive knowledge of the specification, combined with its actual application to numerous installations.
IEC-61508 This pan-industry International Standard is primarily concerned with safety-related control systems. The standard is structured to accommodate rapid developments within the safety arena. It is a generic standard, which provides a framework for the development of industry and equipment-specific standards.
We have a detailed understanding of the intent of the standard, coupled with a strong technical and operational understanding of specific applications. This allows us to make the standard work for, rather than against, project objectives.
IEC Staff The blend of our experience allows us to offer assistance to our customers at every stage of verification, validation, and assessment processes. This includes assisting with the design of a safety-related system, software safety planning, producing change control procedures, and auditing completed systems.
We believe in investing time and effort during the initial design stages of a project. This investment pays dividends later in the project cycle, both in terms of time saved, and overall financial benefit. Key to our success in this area is our interpretation of standards in a pragmatic and practical way, and our deep knowledge and understanding of the plant, process, or systems involved.
Independence We maintain a totally independent stance. This allows us to design systems based solely on the suitability of the product, or application, for a specific project.
Operability We have carried out a range of process control and operability reviews, ranging from limited-scope studies of specific problems, to full-scale reviews of all aspects of the operation. Our recommendations arising from the studies typically have payback periods of substantially less than 12 months.
Real Time provides computer-based control and information systems, along with related consultancy and support helping to improve the performance of plants, processes and businesses. Our multi-disciplinary, operations-centred approach to control systems design, ensures that man and machine work effectively together, unlocking the full potential of both.
Operability means systems which:
- are robust and resilient, especially to disturbances;
- perform well under stress, and do not simply increase the stress on the operator;
- are understandable and dependable - not “black boxes full of clever tricks”;
- employ pragmatic, common sense engineering, not “high technology” for its own sake.
We can work with the operator, engineering contractor and system vendor to design, implement, and commission the recommended modifications.
